National Popular Vote Compact
As much as we like to believe that each vote counts in this country, in reality, the Electoral College has distorted our idealistic view of democratic elections. The current League position supports abolishment of the Electoral College which would require a constitutional amendment. Realizing the difficulty in passing a constitutional amendment, a movement has been underway in this country to achieve the national popular vote with a compact between states. Under the NPV Compact all of the electoral votes of each member state would go to the presidential candidate receiving the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This interstate compact would not go into effect until enough states have joined to guarantee the 270 electoral votes required to elect a president. Thus far, it has been adopted in four states: Maryland, New Jersey, Illinois and Hawaii. Legislation has passed one or more chambers in another 9 states .—This information was taken from The National Voter, Oct. 2008

Mar. 2010— LWVTSC BOARD BRIEFS —notes by Lea Billinger, secretary
March 9, 2010 LWV Board meeting at the library– 10 board members were present.
- Planning for the Annual Meeting took up much of the attention.
- Look for a summary of the K-12 Education in Shawnee County study with the Annual Meeting report.
- United Methodist Women of Crestview Methodist Church want a speaker from the League on April 14. Gwen will go.
- The televised forum on Judicial Diversity that was being planned (with grant from LWVUS) is not working out because the topic is apparently not appealing enough to KTWU. There was discussion of other TV stations and other media, possibly newspaper ads, to educate on the issue.
- There was discussion of the proposed local study of City and County Government finances which will be voted on at the Annual Meeting.
