National Popular Vote Compact
As much as we like to believe that each vote counts in this country, in reality, the Electoral College has distorted our idealistic view of democratic elections. The current League position supports abolishment of the Electoral College which would require a constitutional amendment. Realizing the difficulty in passing a constitutional amendment, a movement has been underway in this country to achieve the national popular vote with a compact between states. Under the NPV Compact all of the electoral votes of each member state would go to the presidential candidate receiving the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This interstate compact would not go into effect until enough states have joined to guarantee the 270 electoral votes required to elect a president. Thus far, it has been adopted in four states: Maryland, New Jersey, Illinois and Hawaii. Legislation has passed one or more chambers in another 9 states .—This information was taken from The National Voter, Oct. 2008

December 2011— LWVTSC BOARD BRIEFS —notes by Lea Billinger, secretary
December 13, 2011 LWV Board meeting at the library, 8 board members were present.
- Our League has had an 18% increase in membership since April!
- Discussion of the SAFE Act, and its difficulties. Marge plans to draft a letter for state legislators, telling them why moving the effective date up to March is not a good idea. We will encourage our members and other Leagues to weigh in on this, as well.
- Maryanna will be on Ralph Hipp’s show again, December 26.
- Georgia is going to prepare a report on the ups and downs of Tuesday Topics attendance, and the cost and income for lunches, for the annual meeting. Managing lunches has been difficult.
- The Budget Committee needs to be formed, and to meet in January. Any volunteers?
- The Finance Drive net total is $1,510.
- We hope to find more members for the Observer Corps, to attend government sessions and meetings, and other things of interest, and report to the League.
Next board meeting will be January10 at noon, TSCPL.
